Overall objective is to contribute to national goal of poverty reduction through up-scaling the production and industrial consumption of bio-energy, thereby increasing employment and reducing carbon emissions.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. Create more green jobs through up-scaling Small Sized Charcoal Enterprises
  2. Reduce carbon emission through diversifying the production and use of bio-energy as an alternative to imported fossil fuels (LPG, kerosene and coal)
  3. Sustain the production and supply chain of bio-energy and strengthen capacities of actors of charcoal sub-sector while at the same time enhancing natural resource condition

Outcomes

To Objective 1: Production & processing capacity of bio-energy enterprises increased

Additional 10,500 green jobs (full time jobs for at least 6 months per year) will be created from the value chain of 700 charcoal enterprises which will be in operation consuming 87,500 tons of biomass to produce about 30,000 tons charcoal from 14,000 ha sustainably managed community and private forests which are accessible to road heads.

To Objective 2: Use of bio-energy increased with the reduced use of fossil fuels

74,000 tons of CO2 emissions reduced because of the increased use of charcoal and reduction in the use of imported fossil fuels mainly LPG, kerosene and coal by hotels, restaurants and brick industries.

To Objective 3: Sustainable availability and supply of bio-energy to industries ensured

Outreach of services to bio-energy enterprises through local business development service providers and financial institutions increased; network of charcoal enterprises, marketing companies and retailers increased at the level of sustainable production and consumption of the charcoal value chain.
